7000 miles away from our beloved Byron Bay, but so close to our dreams we felt like we were home. Think a wild cactus garden, bursting like some prehistoric garden of Eden, smooth adobe-style stone walls reminiscent of New Mexico or Morocco, Navajo rugs and mosquito nets, angles sliced by stretches of rendered stairs, (stairways to heaven perhaps?) Every room was more perfect than the next, and Mimi floated between them, a light footed pixie, snapping photos on an old film camera as she went.
We’ve loved following the glittering trail left in the wake of Australian blogger/model/dancer/free-spirit Mimi Elashiry. She has this youthful free spirit that takes us back to the days when we too danced barefoot at festivals, dosed high on chai tea and Summer love. Mimi was a muse for us while designing this collection and by the time the collection came to life in all it’s psychedelic blue and violet hues, we knew she’d be the muse for the campaign. She was based in LA at the time we wanted to shoot this, the very same city this magnificent house was located – so it was, it would seem, a match made on a stairway to heaven.
It was one of those shoots where everything just fell into place creatively and stylistically – Mimi shone and the styling (after a full day treasure hunting at Rose Bowl markets a few days prior) was perfection. Belinda, the head of our design team who came along for the ride, told me afterward that she marvelled at the way Spelly transformed each outfit during the shoot – piling on all these old vintage blankets they’d picked up at Rose Bowl, tucking them into Mimi’s belt, or draping over her shoulder, turning normal outfits into dreamy, psychedelic costumes…
We hope you love KISS THE SKY ~ it’s by far our favourite collection in a long while. Our Kiss the Sky print was inspired by ancient mandalas and came to life in the craziest, radiant blue and violet hues, we’ve played around with resort-worthy embroidery borders, divinely intricate luxe-lace with the softest peasant girl cheese cloth and accented it all with some colour popping turquoise crochet pieces! It’s a classic Spell mash of texture, colour and whimsy, all ready to be packed in your suitcase for your next vacay, or paired down with a threadbare pair of old jeans or plain white tee any day of the week.
