Podcasts we’re listening to

We’re always on the hunt for new podcasts to plug into our ears to listen to while we’re working out, laying on the beach, doing the lighty {that’s Byron talk for walking up to the lighthouse – a must do if your in town!} driving to work, and pretty much any time we can tune in to get our daily dose of inspiration!
So we asked some of the avid podcaster listeners at our Byron HQ to share their faves. Add them to your list to listen to in 2018, and if there’s any you’ve been lusting after share them in the comments below so we can discover some new office favourites!

The Tim Ferris Show
I first listened to Tim Ferris after friend Kim Amos gave me a list of her fave podcasts to listen to while she’s SUP’ing down the river in Brunswick Heads. I steer away from the ‘fitness and training’ eps and gravitate towards business and creative ones.
Fave eps are #249 How to make a difference & find your purpose with Blake Mycoskie of Toms Shoes / #248 10 Commandments of Startup Success with Reid Hoffman / #240 Accelerated Learning and Mentors / #231 How to be creative like a motherf#cker with Cheryl Strayed.

Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman
This is one for the heavy business heads, but don’t let that put you off, Reid distills some very human and heart-driven advice from these Silicon Valley heavyweights. Prob some of my fave podcasts ever, i could listen to Mark Zuckerberg and Cheryl Sandberg talk for ever.
Fave eps: #1 Airbnb’s Brian Chesky / #4 Mark Zuckerberg / #5 Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg / #6 Google’s Eric Schmidt on managed chaos / #8 Netflix’s Reid Hastings on Culture.

Think of a mystery that can’t be solved by ‘googling’ – like how tall is Jake Gyllanhall really…  I listen to Mystery Show when Im in transit, walking around airports or on planes. The host, Starly is the cutest and I love how she can drop into conversation with a stranger like no bodies business. Fave ep: Case #3 ‘Belt Buckle’. But they’re all pretty great.

Small Business Big Marketing with Timbo Reid
Not all podcasts need to be American. I like Timbo Reids take on small business marketing ideas and hearing from some Aussie Businesses.
Fave eps: #366 Ugg Boots founder Brian Smith & #355 Stone & Wood’s Jamie Cook.

Of course I love Girlboss Radio too and look forward to it starting up again after a long hiatus.

Women of the Hour by Lena Dunham
Episode 1 about friendship between strong women is just brilliant

Song Exploder
A podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made.

Bang On
A feminist podcast that feels like you are just chatting with your best mates over a wine – conversations of the week about music, art, life and stuff.

American political comedian Marc Maron interviews everyone from Drew Barrymore to Alice Cooper to Obama about their lives, and how they became who they are today.

A podcast about the internet… well, sort of. More of an exploration into the modern human existence with bits of technology sprinkled in. It’s hosted by PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman (formerly This American Life), who launched the show in 2014 so there are endless episodes to listen to. My favourite episodes #79 Boy In A Photo and #64 On The Inside.
My Favourite Murder
Two gal pal comedians discussing their favourite tales of true crime. Listen and get totally sucked into Karen and Georgia’s funny, warm and uber feminist take on true crime. Top tip, start from the beginning… SSDGM.
The Messenger
We don’t hear much about those detained on Manus Island and Nauru. This podcast follows the journey of Aziz, an asylum seeker who has been in detention on Manus Island for 3 years. Find out what it’s really like to flee your country by boat to seek a better life. Make sure you listen from episode 1.

My Dad Wrote A Porno
Another staff member (Anna!) introduced me to this Podcast and I love it for my drives to work because its like drinking with your English mates. Basically, Jamie Morton and his two friends James and Alice are reading a soft porn novel that his Dad wrote, it is terribly written and they take the piss out of it.

Fave episode: there are many but I don’t think this is one you can just pick up and listen from an episode – to really understand you must listen from the start!

Girl Boss Radio
This is one of my favourite podcasts when I am wanting to listen to entrepreneurial journeys. Hosted by Sophia Amoruso, creator of the term Girl Boss and founder of Nasty Gal, she interviews a new woman each week on their career journey, but in a real and honest way.
Fave episode: Charlize Theron, the very first episode, Alli Webb, Founder of Drybar and Gwenyth Paltrow.

No Filter with Mia Freedman

Mia Freedman has an interesting (and sometimes uncomfortable!) interview style – she just has a way of asking the questions we want to know, that usually would be invasive, but with tact. A lot of the time I am not personally interested in who she interviews, but the stories that come out of them are amazing!

Fave episode: The Secret Life of Samuel Johnson – he has such an interesting perspective on life , What Kasey Chambers Did Next,  Jane McGrath’s Legacy is more than just pink.
Andrew Denton saw his father die a slow and painful death, which has made him an advocate for euthanasia or assisted dying. He explores in his series how it is working overseas and some cases of people wanting this option in Australia, and also people who don’t believe the option would work. Warning, it is gritty, real and emotional – but an amazing listen.
Fave episode: Can’t say there is a favourite as the stories are rather sad – but a life affirming podcast!
